Bigaglia, Diogenio

Diogenio Bigaglia

b Venice, c1676; d Venice, c1745

Little is known of his life, however we know that in 1694 he entered the Benedictine Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, became a priest in 1700 and finally Prior of the Monastery in 1713.

He wrote both sacred and secular vocal music as well as instrumental music including concerti, sonatas and trio sonatas. He was very aware of the musical fashions of both Germany and France and made significant contribution to the Church Sonata form and to flute technique.

This is taking the sacrifice for love just a little too far... Despite Irene's nastiness, her coldness, her viciousness her lover still wants to die just for her. RARA format with a stunning first aria and challenging last, this is one of the Venetian priest's excellent miniatures. Source: Naples

Bigaglia: Se tu resisti ò cor
Forces: soprano & continuo

The figures are in a different hand to the manuscript copy (perhaps a later performer?). An attractive work with a very interesting 'left-footed' Siciliano to end.
